Wonder Sporting Club (Botswana)
Founded in 1959, it was one of the older clubs in the country. Nicknamed “Matjimenyenga,” it played its home matches at the Otse Stadium (capacity around 2,000). The club competed primarily in the lower divisions for much of its history before reaching the Botswana Premier League.
It appeared in the top flight at least in the 2013 season (and is listed in some historical tables from earlier years, such as around 1994 and the early 2000s). Notable past players include Duncan Kgopolelo.
On 28 January 2014, Wonder Sporting merged with Botswana Police XI SC to form Police XI FC (sometimes referred to simply as Police FC). This effectively ended the independent existence of Wonder Sporting as a separate entity.
Botswana’s football landscape has seen several clubs struggle or disappear due to heavy reliance on individual sponsors (“blessers”) rather than sustainable structures. When sponsors withdrew, teams like Mokgosi Young Fighters, certain iterations linked to ECCO City Greens, FC Satmos, and others faded or folded. More recently, VTM FC (a short-lived Premier League side promoted around 2023) ceased professional operations in mid-2024, citing unsustainable costs, and shifted focus to youth development while seeking to sell its league status.
