🇧🇯 Adjidjas FAP (Benin)

Adjidjas FAP (Benin)

Ajijas Cotonou (also known as Adjidjas FAP or AJIJAS FAP) was a Beninese football club based in Cotonou that competed in the top division before dissolving in 1988.

Founded in 1970 (some sources link it to earlier military or related teams), it played for many seasons in the Benin Premier League (then known as the Championnat National) during the 1970s and 1980s. Its greatest success came in the 1981 season, when it won the national championship—its only major domestic title.

As league champions, the club qualified for the 1982 African Cup of Champions Clubs (the precursor to the CAF Champions League). It advanced past the preliminary round by defeating ASC Police (of Mauritania or a similar regional side, aggregate 3–1) before being eliminated in the first round by Stella Club d’Adjamé of Ivory Coast (aggregate 2–6).

The club played its home matches at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Cotonou (capacity around 15,000). It finished mid-table in later seasons, including 6th in 1987. The side disappeared in 1988 following the cancellation/abandonment of the Premier League that year, a period of disruption in Beninese football.

RSSSF records list AJIJAS FAP (associated with Bohicon in some notes) as dissolved in 1988, aligning with the Spanish Wikipedia account of the Cotonou-based club.

Later references to a lower-division side using a similar name (sometimes linked to Adjidja FC or other entities) appear to represent a different or revived team rather than a continuous existence of the original 1981 champions.

This makes Ajijas Cotonou a clear example of a once-prominent Beninese club that vanished amid the instability of the national league in the late 1980s.
