🇧🇮 Inter FC (Burundi)

Inter FC (Burundi)

Inter FC (also known as Inter Football Club or Inter Bujumbura) was a historic and highly successful Burundian football club based in Bujumbura that is now defunct.

Founded in 1927 (or 1929 according to some records), it was one of the oldest clubs in the country and a founding member of the national top division in the early 1960s. The club played at the Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium (capacity around 22,000) and was a dominant force in Burundian football, particularly from the 1970s through the late 1980s.

They won the Burundi Premier League (Ligue A) 9 times, in 1970, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1989 whilst winning the Burundian Cup twice. (1983 and 1984).

It formed a classic rivalry (often called the Burundian “El Clásico”) with Vital’O FC after both clubs received sponsorship from the Brarudi company in the mid-1970s (Inter linked to a beer brand, Vital’O to a soft drink). The two sides monopolized the top of the league for decades. Inter also competed in African continental competitions, including the African Cup of Champions Clubs and CAF Cup.

In 1987, a leadership crisis (triggered by the imprisonment of the club president) caused a major split. One faction remained as Inter FC but struggled and faded, while the other formed AS Inter Star (which continues today and has won titles of its own). The original Inter FC disappeared around 1989 after its final league title.
