🇹🇯 Sitora Dushanbe (Ситора Душанбе) (Tajikistan)

Sitora Dushanbe (Ситора Душанбе) (Tajikistan)

Sitora Dushanbe (Ситора Душанбе, also known as Sitora or “Star”) was a short-lived but successful Tajik football club that won consecutive national championships before dissolving in the mid-1990s due to financial problems.

Based in the capital Dushanbe, Sitora emerged in the early years of independent Tajikistani football after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The club won the Tajikistan Higher League (the top division) in 1993 and 1994, establishing itself as one of the strongest sides in the nascent post-Soviet championship. In 1995 it finished as runners-up, competing closely with the more established Pamir Dushanbe.

Financial difficulties mounted in 1996. The club struggled to pay players’ wages, yet the squad completed the season and secured a bronze medal. After the campaign ended, unpaid debts led to the club’s complete dissolution. Its best players dispersed to other teams, and Sitora never reformed.
