🇬🇭 Real Republicans FC (Ghana)

Real Republicans FC (Ghana)

Real Republicans FC (also known as Real Republicans or Osagyefo’s Own Club), based in Accra, was a short-lived but highly successful Ghanaian football club founded in 1960/1961 and dissolved in 1966.

It was created under the direction of Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana’s first president, often called Osagyefo) and sports director Ohene Djan as a national project to strengthen Ghanaian football and promote pan-African ideals through sport. The squad was assembled by selecting the two best players from existing top local clubs, including talents such as Baba Yara and Dogo Moro (from Asante Kotoko) and Addo Odametey and Doddo Ankrah (from Hearts of Oak). Edward Aggrey-Fynn served as captain.

They won the Ghana Premier League / national championship in 1962/63 (their only league title) and the Ghana FA Cup four consecutive times, a dominant run in the competition during their brief existence.

The club entered the top flight in the 1961/62 season and was regarded as a model modern professional side at a time when the domestic league faced instability (including temporary boycotts by some teams). Many of its players formed the core of the Ghana national team (Black Stars) that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1963 (hosted by Ghana) and 1965.

Real Republicans was dissolved in 1966 following the military coup that overthrew Nkrumah. Its existence was closely tied to the political project of the Nkrumah government, and it faced criticism from other clubs (especially Asante Kotoko supporters) for “poaching” top talent.
