Onze Frères de Bassam (Ivory Coast)
Founded in the colonial era in the historic coastal town of Grand-Bassam (one of the earliest centres of organised football in Côte d’Ivoire), Onze Frères was among the pioneering clubs of the pre- and immediate post-independence period. It won the national championship in the first two seasons after independence: 1960 and 1961 (listed in some records under related Bassam formations such as USC Bassam, which itself resulted from earlier mergers of local clubs including FC Bassam and others).
In 1965 the club was one of several local sides (including Onze Frères, Red Star, Jeunesse Club, Olympic Club from Gagnoa, and Tigres Noirs) that merged to form Sporting Club de Gagnoa (SC Gagnoa). This kind of consolidation was common in the early decades of Ivorian football as smaller or financially weaker clubs combined resources to survive.
After the merger, Onze Frères ceased to exist as a separate competitive entity. SC Gagnoa went on to win the national title in 1976 and remains active, but the original Bassam club lives on only as a historical name in the early records of Ivorian football.
