AS Kalamu (DR Congo)
Founded in Kinshasa, the club competed in the top flight (then known as the Zaire championship) during the Mobutu era. Its peak came in the mid-to-late 1980s under president Timothée Moleka. AS Kalamu won the Challenge Papa Kalala (the main national cup competition at the time, later evolving into forms of the Coupe du Congo) four consecutive times: 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. This made it the most successful club in that competition’s history.
On the continental stage, the club made five appearances in the African Cup Winners’ Cup (the precursor to the CAF Confederation Cup). It reached the quarter-finals twice—in 1986 (eliminated by Egypt’s Ismaily) and 1989 (eliminated by Nigeria’s Bendel Insurance)—and also progressed past teams from Angola, Kenya, the Central African Republic, and Rwanda in other campaigns. Its last CAF outing came in 1990, when it was eliminated by Burundi’s Vital’O on penalties.
The club’s decline began after Moleka’s departure around 1990. It missed the first properly structured 18-team national championship organized by FEZAFA and never recovered its former status. Sources note that it has not competed in the top division (Linafoot) since the end of the Zaire period. It has since played in lower regional leagues in Kinshasa (such as the EUFKIN / Entente urbaine or related second-division structures).
