Futebol Clube de Luanda (Angola)
Founded on 30 January 1935 (some sources note 1933) as an affiliate of Portugal’s FC Porto, it was one of the city’s historic clubs during the colonial era. It owned and inaugurated the Estádio da Cidadela on 10 June 1972 (capacity around 12,000), which was later nationalized after Angola’s independence in 1975.
The club has been largely inactive at senior level since independence, with only limited underage or youth training activities continuing in later years. It has lacked proper management for a long time and has been run informally by figures such as secretary general Alberto de Almeida. Former notable associations include Angola’s long-time president José Eduardo dos Santos (as a player in his youth) and prominent Angolan footballer Ndunguidi Daniel.
Like many colonial-era clubs linked to Portuguese teams, it struggled after 1975 amid political changes, the civil war, and efforts to erase colonial ties. Many such clubs either dissolved, merged into new entities (such as those that formed Petro de Luanda), or faded from top-level competition.
