University of the West Indies Football Club (Jamaica)

University of the West Indies Football Club (UWI F.C., nicknamed the Pelicans) was a Jamaican football club based at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies near Kingston. It competed in the Jamaica Premier League (then often called the National Premier League or Red Stripe Premier League) before dissolving in 2021.

The club earned promotion to the top flight for the first time after the 2014–15 season. In its debut Premier League campaign (2015–16), it finished just one point outside the championship play-offs. It continued competing in subsequent seasons, reaching the play-off quarterfinals in 2018–19 (finishing 6th in the regular season). Home matches were played at the UWI Bowl (capacity around 3,000).

Financial pressures ultimately ended its top-level existence. In June 2021, ahead of a shortened post-COVID season, UWI withdrew from the Premier League. University officials cited the high costs of maintaining professional contracts, scholarships for student-athletes, coaching staff, and other expenses amid broader campus budget constraints. The club was formally dissolved that year and has not returned to senior competitive football.
