Pumas de la UNAH (Honduras)
Pumas de la UNAH (also known as Universidad or Club Deportivo Universidad), the professional football team of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH), was a prominent but now-defunct club based in Tegucigalpa.
Founded on 12 December 1965, it competed in the Liga Nacional (Honduras’s top flight) across multiple periods and achieved notable success. The club finished as national runners-up twice—in the 1979–80 season (losing to Marathón) and in 1983–84 (losing to CD Vida).
Its greatest international accomplishment came in 1981, when it reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, losing 2–0 on aggregate to Mexico’s Pumas UNAM (with goals from Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti and Hugo Sánchez).
The team experienced several promotions and relegations over the decades. After descending in the Clausura 2007, financial difficulties forced it to sell its category (franchise/spot) in the second division to Lobos UPNFM. It subsequently disappeared from professional football.
