🇧🇩 Team BJMC (Bangladesh)

Team BJMC (Bangladesh)

Team BJMC (Team Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation), a Forgotten Football Club based in Dhaka that was dissolved in 2019–20.

Founded in 1963 (originally as East Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation/EPIDC before Bangladesh’s independence, then briefly as Bangladesh JIC, and renamed Team BJMC around 1975), it was owned by the state-run Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation. Nicknamed “The Jutemen,” it represented industrial and corporate interests in Bangladeshi football and played home matches at the BJMC Club Field (and later shared venues such as Shaheed Bulu Stadium).

In the pre- and early post-independence era, it was a strong force in the Dhaka First Division League (the top tier at the time). It won the title five times: 1967, 1968, 1970, 1973, and 1979. It also claimed two Dhaka Second Division titles (1965 and 1988–89).

Football activities were halted in 1981. After nearly three decades of inactivity, the club returned to professional football in 2010 under former Bangladesh national team captain Arif Khan Joy as manager.

It competed in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL, the modern top flight) in the 2010s, with mixed results. In the 2018–19 season it finished last, earning just 11 points from 23 matches, and was relegated after a 0–2 loss to Brothers Union.

In early 2020, BJMC informed the Bangladesh Football Federation that it was withdrawing from the second-tier Bangladesh Championship League and dissolving the team. The corporation cited severe financial difficulties: running a top- or second-tier side required an estimated Tk 5–6 crore (roughly $500,000–600,000 USD at the time) per year. Officials noted unpaid player wages from the prior season and broader problems, including job losses among roughly 1,800 BJMC workers (including athletes in other sports).
