🇺🇸 Spokane Zephyr FC (USA)

🇺🇸 Spokane Zephyr FC was a short-lived American professional women's soccer club based in Spokane, Washington.

It competed in the USL Super League (also known as the Gainbridge Super League), a top-tier Division I women's soccer league in the United States.

Founded in May 16, 2023 (franchise awarded to Aequus Sports), their name and crest announced November 4, 2023.

They played their home games at the One Spokane Stadium (capacity ~5,000) in Spokane, Washington.

Ryan and Katie Harnetiaux (via Aequus Sports LLC), who also owned the men's side Spokane Velocity FC (USL League One) had decided it was time to start a Women's football team within the franchise.

But the venture was short ljved as the team only played two seasons (2024–25 and 2025–26) in the USL Super League.

The club was part of the inaugural USL Super League season. Its first match was on August 17, 2024. It faced significant challenges due to geography—Spokane had the longest travel distances in the league, with the nearest opponent (Dallas Trinity FC) about 1,500 miles away.

In the 2024–25 season, they finished 5th; 11 wins, 9 draws, 8 losses but did not qualify for playoffs. They had an average attendance of 2,537.

In the
2025–26 season, they also finished 5th (e.g., 10-9-9 record with +6 goal difference in one report); narrowly missed playoffs again. The season ended in mid-May 2026.

On May 20, 2026, Aequus Sports/USL Spokane issued a brief statement:

“After careful consideration, we have made the decision not to continue operating a professional women’s team beyond the 2025/26 season.”

They emphasized it was “not the end of women’s soccer in Spokane” and committed to exploring other ways to support the sport locally.

Reports highlighted financial struggles, payment issues, and the high costs of operating a standalone women's pro team in a smaller market with extreme travel demands.

The men's Velocity FC continued operations. The announcement came abruptly, disappointing fans, players, and the local soccer community.

The official date the team dissolved was May 20, 2026 (operations ceased immediately after the 2025–26 season

Spokane Zephyr FC was Spokane's first professional women's sports team and helped bring top-tier women's soccer to the Inland Northwest for two seasons.

Will we see them rise again? Is this an all too familiar scenario in the Women's game?
