San Salvador Fútbol Club (El Salvador)
The club was founded on 7 January 2002 and quickly made an impact. In its first season it reached the runner-up position, and in the Clausura 2003 tournament it won the national championship by defeating Luis Ángel Firpo 3–1 in the final. This made it one of the more surprising success stories of early-2000s Salvadoran football. It played its home matches at the large Estadio Cuscatlán (capacity around 45,000–53,000), the country’s main stadium.
Financial and administrative problems eventually caught up with the club. After finishing near the bottom of the table in the Clausura 2008 season, it lost a promotion/relegation playoff against Juventud Independiente (4–2 on aggregate) and was relegated to the Segunda División. Players then went unpaid, prompting the club to sell its second-division spot to settle debts. This effectively ended operations, and San Salvador FC ceased to exist.
