🇵🇱 Gwardia Warsaw (Poland)

Gwardia Warsaw were founded in 1948 and played their home matches at the Stadia WKS Gwardia.

The club never won a top flight title but did win a Polish Cup in 1954. Whilst they didn't light the Polish domestic scene this Forgotten Football Club will be remembered for their European exploits.

Gwardia Warsaw were not only the first Polish club to compete in the European Cup, but they were also one of 16 clubs to compete in the first-ever European Cup.

This was even though they only came 4th in their domestic league the year before. They only got a last-minute invite as Chelsea had declined the invitation to join, under pressure from the Football League at the time.

But Gwardia Warsaw's stay in the competition was short-lived, as they were knocked out in the First Round by Swedish club Djurgårdens IF Fotboll.

While the away game in Sweden finished 0-0, (the first ever goalless draw in the European Cup recorded) the return leg in Poland ended 4-1 in favour of Djurgårdens IF Fotboll.

Swedish striker, John Eriksson, scored a hat-trick, which many would think would give him the record of scoring the first-ever hat-trick in the European Cup.

Unfortunately for Eriksson, three players had already beaten him to it.

Péter Palotás of MTK Budapest FC, Alfred Körner of Rapid Vienna and Miloš Milutinović of Partizan Belgrade all scored hat-tricks, with the latter scoring four in one game.

The Harpoons as they were known as were founded in 1948, and played at the Stadion "WKS" Gwardia.

Gwardia Warsaw would go on to play many more years until their dissolution in 2018 and thus became the first of the 16 original clubs to play in the European Cup to become a Forgotten Football Club.
