FC Unirea Urziceni (Romania)
The club was founded on the 28th July 1954 in Urziceni, a small town in Ialomița County (about 60 km northeast of Bucharest).
The original top-level club effectively ceased operations in 2011 after bankruptcy and withdrawal of financial support. A spiritual successor or lower-league revival appeared later, but the historic entity that reached the top flight is considered defunct.
The club spent most of its early decades in the lower divisions. Everything changed when local businessman and politician Dumitru Bucșaru invested heavily in the mid-2000s:
They were promoted to Liga I (top division) for the 2006–07 season,
and finished 3rd in 2007–08 qualifying for the UEFA Cup.
In the 2008–09 season they won the Liga I championship (their only title), finishing ahead of giants like Dinamo BucureÈ™ti and Rapid BucureÈ™ti. Coach Dan Petrescu masterminded the success.
They also reached the Romanian Cup final in 2008 but lost out to CFR Cluj.
As Romanian champions, Unirea entered the UEFA Champions League group stage in the 2009-10 edition and were paired in a group with Sevilla, Stuttgart, and Rangers.
They earned 4 points (including a famous 1–1 draw away at Sevilla) but ultimately, they finished bottom of the group and were eliminated.
After the owner drastically reduced funding post-2009, the club spiraled:
They were relegated from Liga I in 2010–11 and the club started to accumulate severe debt problems which led to bankruptcy and dissolution around 2011.
