🇵🇹 Grupo Desportivo de Riopele (Portugal)

G.D. Riopele (Grupo Desportivo de Riopele)

Grupo Desportivo de Riopele (G.D. Riopele) was a Portuguese football club (and multi-sports entity) based in Pousada de Saramagos, Vila Nova de Famalicão, in the Braga District.

The club was founded in 1958 (specifically on 14 September) by owners and workers of the Riopele textile factory. It started as a **works team (clube-empresa) for the company's employees and local community.

The club rose through the divisions in the 1970s. Its peak came in the 1977–78 season, when it played in the Primeira Liga (top tier) for the only time in its history. It finished 15th (penultimate place) and was relegated.

It was a classic example of a modest "company club" that briefly punched above its weight in Portuguese football.

Notable players that played for them
would have been former Benfica and Flamengo manger, Jorge Jesu, played for Riopele early in his career.
José Romão and others like Toni Conceição, Arnaldo Silva, also played for the club.

The club was dissolved in 1985 primarily to protect the textile company's reputation amid the challenges and "emotions" of professional football (financial pressures, competitive struggles). After dissolution, the Riopele company shifted support to sponsor another local club, G.D. Joane.
