🇺🇾 The Dublin Football Club (Uruguay)

The Dublin Football Club was a Uruguayan football club based in Montevideo, specifically in the Punta Carretas neighbourhood.

Active during the amateur era of Uruguayan football, it competed in the country’s top division for 13 seasons between 1908 and 1923, with its best achievements being fourth-place finishes in 1908, 1911, and 1918.

The club, founded in 1907 by young enthusiasts from Punta Carretas and Pocitos, also won the Divisional Intermedia (second tier) in 1915. Its colours were red and white.

Dublin FC gained international recognition through tours to Brazil, notably drawing 0-0 with the Brazilian national team in 1917 and defeating them 1-0 in 1918, with Rodolfo Marán scoring the decisive goal.

These matches, played in Rio de Janeiro, included a notable game against Botafogo, where Brazilian officials’ formal attire (top hats and tailcoats) led to the term “cartola” for sports directors in Brazil.

The club also fostered international ties by playing teams in Argentina and Uruguayan cities like Salto and Minas.

Despite its contributions to Uruguayan football’s early global outreach, Dublin FC struggled domestically, never winning major local titles.

Internal disputes with Uruguayan football authorities led to a temporary withdrawal from the league in 1913, though it returned in 1915. After finishing last in 1923, the club was relegated and dissolved before the next season.

Iny research I found no connection with The Dublin Football Club and Dublin or Ireland.

Are there any other clubs out there that take the name of another city from a different country?
