Bo’ness Football Club was a Scottish football club based in Bo’ness, Scotland, active from the late 19th century until 1945.
The club, possibly founded as early as 1878 (though it claimed 1881), played at Newtown Park and wore royal blue shirts with white shorts.
Its early years saw participation in friendly matches, with the first recorded games against Grasshoppers’ second XI in 1881. The club moved to Newtown Park in 1886, opening with a 4-0 loss to Dumbarton F.C.
Bo’ness joined various leagues, starting with the Eastern Football Alliance in 1891, which collapsed mid-season.
It won the East of Scotland Shield in 1894–95 and later competed in the Central Football Combination (1901) and Central Football League. In 1921,
Bo’ness was admitted to the newly expanded Scottish Football League Second Division. After several mid-table finishes, the club won the Second Division title in 1927, earning promotion to the First Division. However, it was relegated after one season.
Financial struggles, worsened by the decline of local coal and shale oil industries, plagued the club. By 1931, Bo’ness offered free admission to unemployed locals after 30 minutes of play and struggled to pay the £50 match guarantee to visiting teams.
In October 1932, failure to pay guarantees to Stenhousemuir F.C. and Brechin City F.C. led to its expulsion from the Scottish Football League, with its record (4 wins, 2 draws, 8 losses) expunged. The club cited “industrial depression and competition from dog racing” as reasons for its collapse, alongside a £500 overdraft.
Bo’ness continued as a non-league club until 1939, competing in the Scottish Football Alliance, Edinburgh and District League, Scottish Football Combination, and East of Scotland Football League. Notable player Alex Munro, a future Scotland international, emerged during this period.
In 1945, at the end of World War II, Bo’ness F.C. merged with Bo’ness Cadora, a junior club, to form Bo’ness United F.C., which continues today in the Lowland League.
The defunct club’s legacy includes its brief top-flight stint and resilience amid economic hardship, reflecting the industrial and social challenges of its era.
