Stade Olympique de l’Emyrne (Madagascar)
Founded on 16 December 1911 as an omnisports club (with successful football and rugby sections), it was one of Madagascar’s oldest sporting institutions. The club played its home matches at the Stade Olympique l’Emyrne in Antananarivo.
SOE won the THB Champions League (Madagascar’s top division) in 2001 and finished as runners-up in the Coupe de Madagascar in 2003. It also competed in African competitions, including reaching the second stage of the CAF Champions League in one campaign (despite logistical challenges from domestic unrest).
The club is best remembered for an extraordinary incident on 31 October 2002. In a THB Champions League playoff match against rivals AS Adema, SOE players deliberately scored 149 own goals in protest over a controversial refereeing decision in a prior game (a late penalty awarded against them that cost them a vital win). The final score was AS Adema 149–0 SOE—the highest-scoring match and largest margin of victory in recorded football history. Goals came at a rate of roughly one every 36 seconds. The result led to forfeits of SOE’s remaining results that season, heavy sanctions, and lasting notoriety.
After the 2002 scandal and subsequent seasons of declining performance (including a drop to lower divisions by the late 2000s), the club became inactive and was dissolved around 2006. It did not resume operations in the professional ranks.
