South Tarawa (Kiribati)
It's football structure makes permanent, long-running clubs rare, so fully documented “Forgotten Football Clubs” sides with detailed histories are scarce compared to larger nations. The domestic game centres on the Kiribati National Championship (also linked to the multi-sport Te Runga national games), which is contested mainly by temporary or semi-permanent island/council representative teams rather than fixed professional clubs.
Many sides appear only for specific tournaments and may not return due to travel costs across the widely scattered atolls, funding shortages, or organisational issues.
One early example is South Tarawa, which won the inaugural known edition of the national championship in 1984 (defeating Abaiang 3–1). It does not appear among the regularly competing clubs in later seasons or current lists of participants, indicating it has faded from the competitive landscape.
More recent illustrations of teams ceasing activity include sides that withdrew before the start of competitions.
For the 2024/25 Te Runga (part of the national championship cycle), four teams pulled out prior to kick-off: Tikatai Trading (Bairiki), Temanoku II (Betio, also known as Angiriin Hardware), Bonriki FC (Tarawa), and Eita III (Tarawa). Such withdrawals are common and often signal the effective end of a team’s participation for that period or longer.
Other historically noted sides, such as certain early island representatives or short-lived business-sponsored teams (e.g., various “Trading” or hardware-backed outfits that appear in results), have similarly disappeared from records after limited appearances. The most successful ongoing entities tend to be larger council teams like Betio Town Council (multiple titles including 1995, 1999, 2006, 2009, 2019, and 2023) and Tarawa Urban Council (titles in 1996, 1997, and 2004), which have greater continuity.
In short, Kiribati football’s geography and resources mean many teams are inherently transient; South Tarawa’s 1984 championship success followed by its absence from later competitions is a clear early case of a side that no longer features.
