🇫🇲 Island Warriors Football Club (Micronesia)

Island Warriors Football Club (Micronesia)

Island Warriors Football Club is an example of a short-lived side from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), specifically from the island state of Pohnpei.

Football in the FSM has always been informal and intermittent due to the country’s vast geographic spread across four states (Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap), limited resources, and competition from more popular sports such as basketball. Organised club football has mainly existed at the state level, with the best-documented activity on Pohnpei.

The Pohnpei Premier League was founded in 2009 by English visitors Paul Watson and Matthew Conrad as part of efforts to revive the game after the national team had effectively disbanded. The inaugural season featured five teams: Island Pitbulls, Seventh-Day Adventists (SDA United), International FC, College of Micronesia (C.O.M.-FSM) FC, and Island Warriors.

Island Warriors finished last in that first campaign, earning 0 points from 8 matches while conceding heavily (12 goals scored, 44 conceded). They do not appear in subsequent league tables or championship records, which have been dominated by Island Pitbulls (multiple titles, including as recently as 2022) and occasional appearances by sides such as SDA United, International FC, and Island Chihuahuas.

Like many early FSM clubs (including some listed in partial compilations such as Kolonia FC, Madolenihmw FC, or Fanif FC on Yap), Island Warriors was essentially a local, amateur group assembled for the new league rather than a long-established institution. Once the initial enthusiasm or organisational support faded, it ceased competitive activity and can be regarded as defunct. The broader FSM Football Association itself went largely inactive for nearly two decades before a 2023 revival focused more on futsal and state representation than permanent club structures.

In the FSM context, this pattern is typical: many teams form for a season or two and then disappear due to logistical and funding challenges.
