Hallelujah FC (할렐루야 축구단) (South Korea)

Hallelujah FC (할렐루야 축구단) was a pioneering South Korean football club and the country’s first professional side. It was founded on 20 December 1980 by Choi Soon-young (then president of the Korea Football Association) and dissolved in August 1998.

The club was unique in being composed primarily of Christian (Catholic and Protestant) players and coaches, with an eagle as its mascot. It entered the newly formed professional Korea Super League (the precursor to the modern K League) as one of the inaugural teams in 1983 and immediately claimed the first-ever title that season. After 1985 it transitioned to amateur status, focusing more on missionary and community work while continuing to compete in lower-level and cup competitions.

Notable achievements include becoming K League / Super League champions: 1983 and winning the President’s Cup in 1988, also runners-up in 1994. There were multiple runners-up finishes in the National Football Championship (1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998)

The club was ultimately dissolved in August 1998 amid the Asian financial crisis, which severely affected many corporate and semi-professional teams in South Korea at the time.
