🇱🇰 Colombo FC (Sri Lanka)

Colombo FC (Sri Lanka)

The original Colombo FC, founded in 1880, is one of the earliest documented football clubs in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and is recorded as having been disbanded. A modern club of the same name was established much later in 2008 and is unrelated.

Football was introduced to the island by British military personnel and administrators in the late 19th century, with early matches played on open grounds such as Galle Face in Colombo. The 1880 Colombo FC ranks among the pioneering local or colonial-era sides that helped popularize the sport before organized leagues developed. It predates better-known surviving clubs such as Saunders SC (founded 1918), Java Lane SC (1925), and Colpetty United SC (1922). Detailed records of its competitive record, players, or exact dissolution date are scarce, which is common for clubs from that formative period.

Many other early Sri Lankan clubs from the colonial and early post-independence eras followed a similar path of decline or disappearance.
