AS Sogara (Gabon)
It was the works team of Gabon’s state refining company (Sogara) and became one of the country’s most successful clubs in the 1980s and early 1990s. The club’s colours were green and white, and it played at the Stade de Port-Gentil.
They won the Gabon Championnat National D1 title six times in 1983/84, 1988/89, 1990/91, 1991/92, 1993 and 1994.
They also won the Coupe du Gabon in 1984/85 (3–0 over FC 105) and were also a finalist on other occasions.
They had some continental success: In the 1986 African Cup Winners’ Cup, AS Sogara reached the final—the best run by a Gabonese club for a long time. They lost to Egypt’s Al Ahly (0–3 in Cairo, then a 2–0 home win in Libreville that was not enough on aggregate).
The club was a dominant force during a period when many top Gabonese teams were backed by state companies, government bodies or oil firms (alongside sides such as FC 105, Mbilinga/Shell, and Pétrosport/Elf). Economic difficulties and financial irregularities led to its exclusion from competition after the 1994 title and its dissolution around the same time.
