🇩🇲 Spartans Sports Club (Dominica)

Spartans Sports Club (Dominica)

Spartans Sports Club (often simply Spartans SC or Spartans of Laudat) is a historic football club from Laudat, Dominica, that was one of the island’s stronger sides in the mid-to-late 20th century but is no longer a prominent or top-flight competitor.

Founded around 1960, the club competed in the Dominica Premier League (the top division, also known historically as the Dominica Championship).

It won the national league title at least three times—in 1965, 1969, and 1979—and claimed the knockout cup (Dominica Knock-Out Tournament) on at least two occasions (1967 and 1972). These successes placed it among the more successful clubs of its era, alongside teams such as Harlem United (the all-time leader with around 20 titles), Kensborough United, and Cedar United/Domfruit Rovers.

Spartans represented the village of Laudat (in the interior of Dominica) and played at the modest Laudat Sports Park (capacity around 1,500). Like most Dominican clubs of the period, it was amateur or semi-amateur, drawing on local talent in a league where matches often attracted only small crowds and where cricket has traditionally been the more popular sport on the island.

By the 2010s the club had dropped out of regular top-division contention. Records show it competing in the lower tiers (e.g., around 6th in a lower division in 2016–17), after which it largely faded from national prominence. In the small, community-based Dominican football system, many older village clubs have become inactive, merged, or shifted to purely recreational/youth levels due to limited resources, emigration, and the concentration of strength among a few modern sides (such as Dublanc FC and Harlem United).
