🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Leith Athletic (Scotland)

Leith Athletic (original version, liquidated 1955)

Founded in 1887 in the Leith area of Edinburgh (then a separate burgh), Leith Athletic joined the SFL in 1891 and had multiple spells in the league (including Division One briefly and later Division Two/C).

They reached the Scottish Cup final in 1906 (losing to Hearts) and were known for their nomadic history, using at least 12 different grounds (e.g., Logie Green, Easter Road shared with Hibs, Meadowbank, Powderhall). Financial troubles plagued them repeatedly, including an earlier liquidation and reformation around 1905.

Post-WWII, they were placed in the lower-tier Division C (often with reserve sides), protested league restructuring, got expelled in 1953 for refusing fixtures, and entered voluntary liquidation on 17 May 1955 with heavy debts—ironically just before league changes might have helped them. The original club is defunct, but a reformed Leith Athletic (youth-focused from 1996, senior from 2008 via merger) continues today and claims continuation.
