Club Sporting Tabaco (Peru)
The club was founded on November 16, 1926, primarily by workers and employees of the Estanco de Tabaco (Peru's state tobacco monopoly).
The club was based in the historic Rímac neighborhood, with its first president being Cristóbal Jiménez, the general manager of the tobacco entity. Its colors were light blue (celeste) shirts and white shorts, earning nicknames like Celestes, Tabaqueros, and Rimenses.
Sporting Tabaco competed in Peru's top flight (Primera División) for much of its existence (from 1929 to 1955, with brief relegations). It was considered one of the stronger or "big" clubs of its era, though it never won the national league title.
It did finish runner-up in the Primera División in 1931 (behind Alianza Lima) and 1954.
They had stronger performances in other tournaments, such as winning the Campeonato de Apertura (ANA) in 1954 and regional titles in lower divisions earlier on.
By 1955, the club suffered severe financial difficulties due to the professionalization of Peruvian football and weakening support from the tobacco monopoly (as imported cigarettes entered the market). The Backus and Johnston Brewing Company (owners of the Cristal beer brand), also based in Rímac, acquired the club through a merger led by Ricardo Bentín Mujica.
On December 13, 1955, Sporting Tabaco effectively ceased to exist as an independent entity. Its structure, players, colors, and location helped form the new Sporting Cristal (initially Sporting Cristal Backus), which debuted in 1956 and immediately won the Peruvian title—earning the nickname "the club that was born champion." Sporting Cristal went on to become one of Peru's "Big Three" clubs alongside Alianza Lima and Universitario.
While the original Sporting Tabaco is defunct, its history is often viewed as the foundational chapter of Sporting Cristal by some fans, though the clubs are legally and officially distinct. There have been occasional lower-division revivals or unrelated teams using the name in amateur leagues, but the historic professional club no longer operates.
