🇨🇱 Club de Deportes Green Cross (Chile)

Club de Deportes Green Cross (Chile)

Club de Deportes Green Cross (often just called Green Cross) is a Forgotten Football Club from Chile, Santiago.

It was founded on June 27, 1916, with Francisco Tapia as its first chairman. The club participated in various sports beyond football, including basketball, cycling, and water polo. It was one of the eight founding teams of Chile's professional Primera División league in 1933.

Green Cross enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s, winning the Chilean Primera División title in 1945—the club's only top-flight championship. It also secured Primera B titles in 1960 and 1963, along with earlier regional honors in the Honour Division of Liga Metropolitana de Deportes (1917 and 1918).

The team played most of its home matches at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. Nicknamed Los pijes, it had a solid record in the top division across 25 seasons, with a best position of 1st (1945) and a worst of 18th (1962). Its record victory was a 6–1 win (achieved multiple times), while its biggest defeat was a 1–10 loss to Unión Española in 1934. Juan Morcillo stands as the club's all-time top scorer with 75 goals.

In April 1961, several players died in the LAN Chile Flight 210 plane crash in the Chilean Andes while traveling for a match. The wreckage was initially located shortly after but was lost and rediscovered by climbers only in February 2015.

The club relocated to Temuco in 1965 and merged with the local team Deportes Temuco (initially operating as Green Cross Temuco). By 1985, it had fully transitioned to the Deportes Temuco name, effectively ending Green Cross as an independent entity.
