🇰🇼 Al-Ahli (Kuwait)

Al-Ahli (Kuwait)

Al-Ahli (الأهلي) was an early Kuwaiti football club active in the unofficial leagues of the 1950s before being dissolved as part of a major reorganization of the sport in 1960.** It is one of the notable historical (now defunct) sides from the formative years of organized football in Kuwait.

### Background and early success
Football in Kuwait developed informally in the 1930s–1950s through school, company, ministry, and neighborhood teams. Unofficial competitions ran from around 1951 to 1959. Al-Ahli was among the more prominent of these early clubs and won the unofficial league title in the 1954–55 season. Other contemporaneous sides included Al-Maaref (or Knowledge/Shuwaikh High School teams), Al-Gulf, Al-Uruba (later reorganized as Al-Arabi), and various others such as Al-Tadhamon, Al-Nahda, and Al-Sharqi.

These clubs helped establish the foundations of the game in Kuwait amid the country’s oil-era growth and growing sports culture.

### Dissolution and reorganization
In 1960, Kuwaiti authorities closed the existing informal clubs as part of a broader restructuring to professionalize and formalize sports. New officially registered clubs were established or reorganized under the Kuwait Football Association framework. The first official Kuwait Premier League season began in 1961–62 with a mix of the newly structured clubs (including the modern Kuwait SC, Al-Arabi, and Qadsia) and some school/police teams that were later phased out.

Al-Ahli’s identity effectively ended with this reorganization. Elements of its history and player base are sometimes linked in popular accounts to the founding or early years of the modern Kuwait SC (founded/officially established around 1960 and nicknamed “Al-Ameed” / the Brigadiers), though Kuwait SC is treated as a distinct entity.
