🇴🇲 Ruwi Club (Oman)

Ruwi Club (Oman)

Ruwi Club (also known as Rowi SC or Ruwi SC), based in the Ruwi area of Muscat, is a notable example of a defunct Omani football club. It no longer exists as an independent entity after merging with Al-Bustan Club (from Wadi Kabir) in 2004 to form Muscat Club (also referred to as Muscat SC or Masqat FC).

Ruwi was founded around 1977 and became one of the stronger sides in Omani football during the early years of the organized national league (which began formally in 1976). It won the Omani League (top division) twice: in 1977–78 and 2002–03. It also claimed the Sultan Qaboos Cup in 2003 (defeating Seeb 2–0 in the final) and the Omani Super Cup around that period. These successes made it a significant Muscat-based club in an era when teams from Salalah (especially Dhofar and Al-Nasr) and Fanja often dominated.

Like many Omani clubs of the time, it was a multi-sport entity, but football was its most prominent section. The 2004 merger transferred Ruwi’s league status and much of its identity into the new Muscat Club, which continued competing at the top level and later added further titles (including a league win in 2005–06 under the new name). The original Ruwi Club thus ceased independent operations.

Omani football has seen several such consolidations. Examples include the 1972 formation of Al-Seeb from smaller local sides (Watan, Butolah, Hilal, and Fida) and the 2004 merger that created Ahli Sidab from Al-Ahli and Sidab (with Al-Ahli having won the league in 1981–82 and multiple early Sultan Qaboos Cups). These changes reflect efforts to strengthen clubs amid the country’s developing professional structure, which remains relatively modest by regional Gulf standards (classified lower by the AFC).

Today, the legacy of Ruwi lives on through Muscat Club.
