🇹🇿 Mecco FC (Tanzania)

Mecco FC (Tanzania)

Mecco FC (also referred to as MECCO FC) was a notable football club from Mbeya, Tanzania, that is no longer active.

It was owned by the Mwananchi Engineering and Contracting Company Limited (MECCO), a major Tanzanian construction firm. The club competed in the top tiers of Tanzanian football during its heyday, particularly from the 1980s onward, and was one of several strong sides that put the Mbeya region on the national football map.

Alongside contemporaries like Tukuyu Stars, Mecco FC provided competitive football and helped develop talent that fed into bigger clubs and the national team (Taifa Stars). Notable players associated with the club included Abeid Kasabalala, Rashid Mandanje, Betwel Africa, Ephraim Kayeta, and Danford Ngesi.

Mbeya as a region has a strong football tradition, having produced multiple Premier League teams over the decades (including Tanzania Prisons, Mbeya City, Ihefu/Singida Black Stars, and others). However, Mecco FC and Tukuyu Stars—once prominent—are no longer active on the regional or national soccer scene. Their decline is typical of many company- or institution-backed clubs in Tanzania that struggled once sponsorship or institutional support weakened.
