GS Asmara (Eritrea)
It was established in 1938 during the period of Italian colonial rule in Eritrea. The club was one of the leading sides in the amateur championships that began in the mid-1930s, when football was largely organized among Italian settler teams such as GS Melotti, Savoia, Vittoria, Ardita, and others. GS Asmara (sometimes referred to simply as Asmara Calcio in later years) competed successfully in the local competitions of Italian Eritrea and remained a top team into the post-war period.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Eritrean football underwent a major reorganization. As a result, several primarily Italian-founded clubs were dissolved, including GS Asmara, GS Barattolo, and GS Stella Eritrea. Some surviving teams were renamed (for example, GS Hamasien became GS Asmara in a different incarnation, and others shifted identities).
