🇲🇻 Club Lagoons (Maldives)

Club Lagoons (Maldives)

Club Lagoons was a Maldivian football club based in Malé that competed in the top tiers of domestic football during the 1980s and 1990s before becoming a Forgotten Football Club.

Founded in 1982, it was one of the stronger sides in the country during that era. The club played its home matches at Galolhu Stadium (capacity around 11,850–12,000). It was relegated from the top flight in 1996, competed in the second division in 1997 without earning promotion, and then ceased competing (sources list it as dissolved in 1997).

Major honours include the Maldives National Championship league title in 1989) and the Maldives FA Cup twice in  1990, 1992, also runners-up in 1991 and 1993

It is credited with one of the league titles in the era before the modern Dhivehi League / Dhivehi Premier League structure fully took shape, and it reached four consecutive FA Cup finals in the early 1990s.

They made one appearance in the Asian Club Championship (forerunner of the AFC Champions League) in 1990–91 making it to the qualifying stage.

They were participants in Cup Winners’ Cup in a1994–95 making it to the preliminary round.

The club never advanced beyond the early stages of Asian competition. One notable former player listed in sources is the Danish player Kim Nørholt.

Club Lagoons is a clear example of a once-prominent Maldivian side that faded after relegation and never returned.
