ŠK Futura Humenné (also known historically as FC Chemlon Humenné or HFC Humenné) is an example of a Forgotten Football Club from Slovakia.
The club was founded in 1903 in the eastern Slovak town of Humenné as Homonnai Athlétikai Club (HAC Humenné), reflecting the region's Hungarian cultural influences at the time. Over the decades, it underwent numerous name changes tied to local industries, politics, and sponsorships:
Early names included Sokol Humenné, Tatran Humenné, and various Chemko/Chemlon iterations linked to the local chemical factory.
It became FC Chemlon Humenné in the early 1990s and later evolved into HFC Humenné, 1. HFC Humenné, and finally ŠK Futura Humenné in 2012.
The club was based at the Chemlon Stadion (capacity around 4,750–14,750 depending on sources/configurations).
Humenné enjoyed its greatest success in the 1990s:
They were Slovak Cup winners in 1996 losing to Spartak Trnava 2–1 in the final.
They competed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup during the 1996–97 season. They eliminated Albanian side Flamurtari Vlorë (3–0 aggregate) before losing to Greek giants AEK Athens (1–3 aggregate). A highlight was taking the lead against AEK just 19 seconds into the home leg via club legend Pavol Diňa.
They played in the Slovak top flight (Mars Superliga) from 1993 to 2000, with a best finish of 5th place in 1995–96. Earlier, they won the 1. SNL (second tier) in 1976–77.
Notable players included Slovakia internationals like Ján Mucha (goalkeeper) and the late Marián Čišovský, among others.
The club's fortunes declined after the Chemlon factory's collapse, which removed key sponsorship. Financial troubles led to relegation to lower leagues by 2009. The club was renamed and restructured multiple times in attempts to stabilize, but it ultimately sold its license in summer 2015 and was dissolved (merged into 1. FK Svidník).
A separate FK Humenné has since existed in the town, but it is not a direct continuation of the original club's top-level legacy.
