🇨🇻 Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capo Verde)

Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capo Verde)

One of the most historically significant defunct football clubs from Cape Verde is the original Clube Sportivo Mindelense which was founded in 1910 on the island of São Vicente and forcibly dissolved by the Portuguese colonial authorities in 1938.

Founded on 27 July 1910 in the city of Mindelo by a group of young Cape Verdean students and workers who had been exposed to football in Portugal and Brazil.

It was the very first organised football club not only in São Vicente but in the entire Cape Verde archipelago.

The club’s colours were black and white, and it played at the old Campo da Fontinha (today’s Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena).
Mindelense dominated São Vicente football in the 1920s and 1930s, winning almost every regional championship held during that period.

The club became a symbol of Cape Verdean identity and anti-colonial sentiment. Its growing popularity and the fact that it was run exclusively by native Cape Verdeans (rather than Portuguese settlers) made it a target for the Salazar regime’s repression.

In 1938 the Portuguese colonial government, under the Estado Novo dictatorship, banned a large number of Cape Verdean cultural and sports associations that were seen as potentially subversive.

Mindelense was forcibly shut down, its assets seized, and its members prohibited from using the name or colours.

After the dissolution, former players and supporters immediately re-founded the club in the same year (1938) under a slightly different name: Clube Sportivo Mindelense – Secção de São Vicente.

To avoid further repression they were forced to accept some Portuguese administrators on the board for a few years. After Cape Verde’s independence in 1975, the club officially dropped any reference to “Secção de São Vicente” and returned to the simple name CS Mindelense, which is the famous 12-time national champion club that still exists today.

So, strictly speaking, the original 1910–1938 Mindelense is a defunct club, while the current Mindelense is its direct successor that was re-established under colonial constraints and later fully reclaimed its identity.

Other fully extinct Cape Verdean clubs include:Sporting Clube da Praia (original version dissolved in the 1980s; a new club with the same name was created decades later) CD Travadores (original 1930s version folded; re-founded later)
Vitória FC (São Vicente) – disappeared in the late 1970s

But the forced dissolution and rebirth of the original Mindelense remains the most dramatic and symbolically important case of a “defunct” club in Cape Verdean football history.
